Deeper understanding of shared facilities with East Freo
After a deep dive into budget docs for City of Fremante and Town of East Fremantle, and a quick read of the Library Board of Western Australia Act(1951), I discovered the Annual Contribution formula that is paid yearly in advance and reconciled with active figures on 1 July each financial year as per the governing legislation. A similar, though not legislated arrangement stands for use of the Recycling Centre.
Bike racks at Port Beach
Bike racks were replaced with benches at Port Beach a while ago. While there are some bike racks near the kiosk, there are none by the shower block. The Director of Infrastucture is looking into the concern.
Exhaust fumes from South Beach vendors
A Coastal ward resident emailed Cr Sullivan and me regarding the sounds and smells of diesel generators at the northern end of South Beach. Cr Sullivan had already recieved other complaints so he ran with it and City staff are now reviewing the issue.
Moorni Boorn Park 1989
Tracking down the history of a tree for potential Christmas lighting
The Hilton Precinct group had the idea of locating and lighting a pine tree that had been planted in Moorni Boorn Park. With amazing help from our Local History Librarian, not only was the tree tracked down, but also the Urban Forest Technical Officer who planted it! Community supporters were found to fund the plan, and it is now with the Community Engagement and Parks and Landscape teams to try and make it happen.
Next steps for a crossover dispute
If a resident doesn't agree with City staff, they sometimes ask a Councillor to step in and plead their case. Councillors and City Staff are all working with the same local laws and procedures. It is only when a new set of eyes spots an unintended error that an outcome can change.
Next steps for building permit compliance
Sometimes, even when you think you have followed the right processes and procedures, an issue may arise that you just can't understand. Councillors have the role of connecting you to the right City staff to assist.
Helping connect residents to services
From cat traps to financial counseling referal to Positive Ageing Assistance, there are many things that the City of Fremantle can help residents with. Often folks dont know where or how to find this help. The City's updated website has it all, but sometimes a shared link comes in handy.
City of Fremantle Map of Services
Located a mere four clicks deep on the City website is the amazing Fremantle Community Support map. It is updated twice a year. I was able to put The Buffalo Club in touch with the City staff member currently updating the map to hopefully include their Thursday night Community Kitchen.
Signage for a community event
This one was fun and I really hope it comes to fruition. A Samson resident asked for a 'Drive slowly' sign ahead of their street's Christmas lights display. Still learning which staff to ask which question, I first got a "No", which lead me to dig into all we do as a City for local events, then on to Main Roads WA for the Traffic Management for Events Code of Practice, then to Main Roads Event Manager for Road Planned Interventions, then back to the City staff who can turn the "No" to a "Yes". Still working on it, but hopeful this will happen very soon.
Mowing of verges on bus routes
Many residents are upset that (not all) verges are maintained by the City anymore. The dying long grass on many Hilton verges saw multiple emails come to me, which I followed up with our Infrastructure and Parks team. Yes, there is a seasonal mowing schedule, however it is only a guide and is anticipated to be flexible. Well folks, that means we have to be flexible too. Help your neighbours out if they have an overgrown verge.
Residents in Hilton contacted me after not being able to get their bins to the kerb. While I would love to offer my personal services to put bins out once a week, I just don't have the time! I connected the residents with our very helpful staff in Waste and Cleansing for an outcome to suit all parties.
Signage for wildlife
Sometimes it is not at all obvious who to ask and how to ask it. This is especially true if its asking for signage for bobtail lizards crossing Stevens Street near Booyeembara Park! Stay tuned for pics.
